New business, same heart

Pre-S: This is the first in a "watch me build it" series, where I'm detailing in real-time a massive shift I'm making in my business. If you don't want to get this series, click here to opt out but remain on my regular email list.

🪡 Watch Me Build It, Week 1

Introducing Selvedge Works

For 20 years, my business has lived under my name (Becky Mollenkamp, LLC). In that time, it has changed a lot.

I started as a freelance writer and editor for national magazines and industrial trade publications, then shifted to content marketing for corporations.

After my brother's death, my divorce, and loads of journaling, I shifted to coaching, which has also evolved since 2013.

I added courses, communities, podcasts, collaborations, and more. Soon, I had a constellation of offerings that started to sound ... scattered.

It became difficult for me to easily explain what I do, which meant I didn't talk about it much. And my sales have reflected it.

The truth is, I've always known that my seemingly disparate activities are related and make sense as a single unit.

The core of all that I do is help entrepreneurs thrive inside of systems not built for them.

I began to realize that I was the problem.

I'm not the center of all of this, the work and the why are.

That's why I decided it's time for a re-brand, to de-center myself and make it clear that the thing that binds all of this work is those I'm here to serve.

The impetus for change

I'm part of an awesome mastermind group and during my "hot seat" about two months ago, my peers asked me to list everything I offer on a Canva whiteboard.

Then we mapped everything onto an x/y axis based on income and joy (below).

Rather than uncovering offers I could trash, what I realized is that I want to keep it all, but just find a way to make it make sense.

That’s when the idea for Selvedge Works was born. [Next time, I'll tell you why and how I chose the new name.]

So what exactly is Selvedge Works?

This isn't just a refresh on my branding. This is an entirely new business structure, designed to hold everything I do (and what I create in the future) under one umbrella that hopefully makes sense.

Working tagline: Selvedge Works is a curated ecosystem of conversations, communities, and resources to support entrepreneurs building at the margins.

• Conversations: The various podcasts and newsletters I host/co-host.
• Communities: Memberships for entrepreneurs, podcasters, and coaches.
• Resources: Coaching, courses, downloads, recommendations, and more.

Now it has a name and a CEO (that's me!). And, hopefully, this change will help me more clearly and compellingly communicate about all of the cool shit I have my hands in.

What’s next? I’m building this in the open.

This is the first in a weekly(ish) series I’m calling Watch Me Build It.

Over the next few months, I’ll walk you through how I’m:

  • rewriting messaging,
  • designing a new site,
  • redesigning ... probably everything,
  • making the hard decisions about what stays and what goes,
  • …and what it looks like to rebuild with your values intact.

I decided to share this behind-the-scenes (probably messy) journey because I *love* these sorts of things. I'm a bit of a voyeur in that way. 🤣

I hope you enjoy this following along!

Next week, I'll be talking about how I arrived at the new name. Beyond that, though, everything will be happening in real time because honestly this is as far as I've gotten on this journey. Get ready for the mess!

Change is inevitable. Here in the Midwest, people love to say "if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change." The same can be said about life. Nothing stays the same for long. For the first 3 months of the year, 90% of my brain space was taken up with fear and worry about the new administration. Those very real concerns remain, but then Tax Day changed my perspective. Money troubles took up 90% of my brain space as I tried to figure out how to pay a very late tax bill....

I don't know what to say, honestly. I'm still in awe. Last week, I sent this email, and it was the hardest thing I've ever written. (And that's coming from someone who has shared every "secret," including having had 2 abortions, having cheated on her ex-husband, and having lost her brother to heroin). The next day, I felt such regret that I sent this email talking about that, too. About 37% of you saw those emails, and 13% of my total email list unsubscribed. But nearly as many people (36)...

Yesterday, I sent a really vulnerable email. Here's how the next 24 hours went. I'm sorry for sending 2 emails in 2 days, but I'm always deeply curious when someone else sends an email like the one I sent yesterday. Did they get what they asked for? Was it as embarrassing as they feared?Do they wish they hadn't sent it? So, here's a 24-hours-later update. First, the data: Open rate is 32.78%, a solid 10% lower than usual. 18 people (or .05% of my total list) unsubscribed. The click rate was...
