I'm really doubting myself

The doubt stage has arrived.

It's been a minute since I've shared a behind-the-scenes peek at my shift from a personal brand to Selvedge Works. There's a reason for my silence.

I'm re-thinking EVERYTHING.

Can relate to this? You have an idea, feel 100% stoked about it, start to implement, and then suddenly get hit by panic. What if it's a huge mistake?!

That's where I am. And I've felt stuck here for nearly two weeks. As certain as I felt about Selvedge Works last month, I now feel equally uncertain.

  • Did I create a solution to a problem that didn't exist?
  • Or the wrong solution to a real problem?
  • Is all of this just a distraction from what I really should be doing?
  • Am I going to regret this change if I continue with it?

Intellectually, I know that this cycle is normal and that other factors are contributing to the panic, most notably money struggles. My brain realizes this will pass and I'll likely return to feeling confident about the branding shift.

But knowing it and feeling it are two very different things.

So, I'm doing what I would tell a coaching client to do. I'm honoring the feelings and not "pushing through." I'm giving myself as much time and space as I need.

I don't know what that will mean. Maybe I'll be feeling gung-ho again by week's end and re-ignite my re-brand. Or maybe I'll waver for weeks before deciding to shelve the idea.

Either way, I won't do anything until I feel safe and ready.

Capitalism—especially the entrepreneurial variety—conditions us to take big risks, to go big or go home, to move fast and break things, that the struggle makes you stronger, and that the only failure is giving up.

Admitting that I'm currently questioning everything, after bringing you into this journey, is scary. It's adding to my self-doubt and feelings of failure.

But I know that it's feminist AF to go small and slow, to honor my needs, and to ultimately do whatever feels right for me.

So I'm modeling it, and trusting that you will get it. In fact, I'm trusting that you'll cheer me on, and stick around for this journey's twists and turns (even if it's back to where we began).

PS: If you have a podcast, or are thinking of starting one, do not miss the free Drop the Mic UnSummit I'm running through Feminist Podcasters Collective.

This is an unapologetic alternative to corporate podcasting events because the patriarchy has had the mic for too long. Traditional podcast conferences prioritize commercial, celebrity-heavy panels. We're giving you human-first conversations with real indie creators like you — people without giant budgets, teams or time.
